What is God’s Testimony?

What does it truly mean to love God and one another? In this exploration of 1 John, we are brought face to face with a kind of love that goes far beyond what we can manufacture on our own. The Greek word agape appears 45 times in this short letter, and that repetition is no accident. Agape love is not the love we are born with, not the family bonds of storge, not the deep friendship of filial love, not the passion of eros. It is a sacrificial, unconditional love that flows entirely from God and comes to us only when we humble ourselves to receive it. The greatest commandment, to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, is not a burden we carry on our own backs. It is an invitation to stop straining under the weight of our own effort and let God's love flow through us like a river that never runs dry. The commands are not burdensome, John tells us, because they were never meant to be fulfilled in our own strength. When we grasp that, everything changes. Our faith stops being a performance and becomes a living relationship with the source of love itself.
