Unlocking Hearts: Walking in God's Spirit and Embracing His Will

Opening Our Hearts to God's Will

Have you ever felt like you're constantly hitting roadblocks in your spiritual journey? Like every time you think you know where God is leading you, you run into a "no" instead of a "yes"? It's easy to become frustrated when this happens, but what if these "no's" are actually directing us towards a greater "yes"?

This is precisely what happened to Paul and his companions during their missionary journey. They had plans to go in certain directions, but time and again, they were prevented from doing so. It wasn't until they reached Troas that they received a clear vision of where God wanted them to go - Macedonia. This experience teaches us a valuable lesson: sometimes, God's "no" is simply redirecting us to His perfect "yes."

But how can we discern God's will in our lives? The journey of Paul and his companions provides us with a beautiful model of what we might call the "Trinitarian guide" to walking in the Spirit:
  1. The Holy Spirit's gentle nudges: Like a loving parent guiding a small child, the Holy Spirit often speaks to us through soft impressions and subtle nudges. We need to cultivate a childlike attentiveness to these small promptings in our daily lives.
  2. The Spirit of Jesus' call to love and unity: As we discern God's will, we're called to do so in community, sharing our impressions with others and humbly considering their perspectives. This reflects the love and unity that Jesus modeled and taught.
  3. God the Father's clear direction: When we've been faithful in the small things and loving in our interactions with others, God sometimes speaks more directly through dreams, visions, or unmistakable circumstances.

This threefold approach to discerning God's will requires us to be open-hearted and willing to surrender our own plans. It's about developing a lifestyle of spiritual sensitivity, not just waiting for dramatic revelations.

But what if we find that parts of our hearts are closed off to God? The story of Lydia, a worshiper of God whom Paul encountered in Philippi, offers a powerful illustration. Although Lydia was already seeking God, the scripture tells us that "the Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message." This reminds us that even as believers, we may have areas of our hearts that need divine unlocking.

Perhaps there are chains of fear, bitterness, or idolatry that have locked away portions of our hearts from God's full influence. The good news is that God is ready and willing to open these areas if we invite Him to do so. It's a scary prayer to pray - "Not my will, but Yours be done" - but it's the pathway to experiencing God's dreams and visions for our lives.

As we navigate our spiritual journeys, particularly in a world full of competing ideologies and temptations, it's crucial to remember two fundamental Christian distinctives:
  1. "Nothing but the blood of Jesus" - Our salvation, forgiveness, and relationship with God come through Christ alone. In a world of many spiritual options, we must hold fast to the uniqueness of Jesus' sacrifice.
  2. "Nothing but the marriage bed" - Sexual purity, both before and within marriage, is a core aspect of Christian living. In a culture that often trivializes sexuality, we're called to a higher standard that honors God and protects our spiritual vitality.

These principles, distilled from the early church's guidance to Gentile believers, provide a clear foundation for Christian living in any cultural context.

As we reflect on these truths, let's consider: Where in our lives do we need to be more attentive to the Holy Spirit's gentle nudges? How can we better practice loving unity with other believers as we seek God's will together? Are there areas of our hearts that we've locked away from God, perhaps out of fear or past hurts?

Remember, just as God opened Lydia's heart to respond to the gospel, He desires to open our hearts fully to His love and purposes. It might feel vulnerable or even frightening to pray, "God, open my heart," but this prayer is the key to experiencing deeper intimacy with God and clearer direction in our lives.

Let's challenge ourselves to live with an expectant attitude, looking for God's guidance in the small daily choices and the big life decisions. Let's commit to sharing our spiritual journey with trusted fellow believers, valuing their insights and loving support. And most importantly, let's courageously invite God to unlock any chained-off areas of our hearts, trusting that His plans for us are good.

As we do this, we may find that what seemed like frustrating "no's" in our lives were actually God's loving way of leading us to His perfect "yes." We may discover, like Paul and his companions, that God has prepared good works for us in advance, works that we couldn't have imagined or planned ourselves.

So today, will you join in this prayer? "Lord, open my heart. Remove any chains of fear, bitterness, or idolatry. Help me to be sensitive to Your Spirit's guidance, to love others as I seek Your will, and to courageously follow where You lead. Not my will, but Yours be done."
In this journey of faith, may we all experience the joy of fully opened hearts, responsive to God's love and leading in every area of our lives.
