United Suffering

Mar 22, 2026    Rev. Greg Pittman

This powerful message explores the profound truth that we are never alone in our suffering because Christ has walked every path of pain we will ever face. Drawing from 1 Peter, we discover how the early Christians faced persecution not for criminal acts, but simply for following Jesus—refusing to worship Caesar, being accused of cannibalism for taking communion, and disrupting social norms by treating women and slaves with dignity. Their suffering was real, confusing, and frightening, yet they were called to rejoice in it. Why? Because suffering united them intimately with Christ who endured rejection, betrayal, physical agony, and even abandonment by those closest to him. The message distinguishes between human suffering—illness, loss, broken relationships, mental health struggles—and suffering specifically for our faith. Yet in both, God meets us as an insider who truly understands. Like a retired test pilot sending his wife who had experienced miscarriages to comfort another grieving mother, Christ sends himself to us in our darkest moments because he has been there. The invitation is not to avoid suffering or pretend it doesn't hurt, but to pour out our hearts honestly to God, even in anger, and pray the surrender prayer: not my will but your will be done. In that sacred space of vulnerability and trust, our hearts are purified, our faith deepens, and we experience a supernatural intimacy with God that transforms us from the inside out.
