United Methodists Respond with Prayer & Aid for places like Pakistan, Haiti, Mexico, Chile, etc. You can help! Click here to make disaster kits. August 16, 2010—For some 3.5 million children, Pakistan's worst floods in 80 years could have deadly consequences. That's the United Nations' estimate of how many are at risk for diarrhea, cholera, typhoid and other water-borne diseases. In response, relief workers like Matt Capobianco, director of emergency programs for GlobalMedic, are on the front lines of the disaster, trying to provide clean drinking water to those displaced by the floodwaters. "It's definitely a dire situation for a lot of people," he said. A partner of the United Methodist Committee on Relief, GlobalMedic has been providing 40,000 liters of clean drinking water a day in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province. But the crisis has worsened since Capobianco arrived on Aug. 7. "The rains are continuing," he explained during a telephone conversation from the Punjab province, where he was helping set up a new relief station. "The areas that are being affected are increasing, it seems, almost daily." |

A major earthquake hit impoverished Haiti on Tuesday, toppling buildings in the capital Port-au-Prince, burying residents in rubble and causing many deaths and injuries, witnesses in the city said. REUTERS/Alertnet.org Steven O. Parrish Community Center, Mexicali (part of the Santo Nino Church) – This is a double-wide trailer that was knocked off of its supports. It is unusable at present. (Pastor Melo reports that it will cost $700.00 to raise, level and reattach the two trailers. This will include the cost of reconnecting broken pipes, including the sewer and fresh water.) Templo El Divino Redentor, Mexicali, B.C. – There is serious damage to the structure of the second and third floor. There are deep cracks in some of the structure, Some of the windows in the sanctuary are separated from their base. Tomorrow, an architect will evaluate the damage. There have not been reports of damage to the homes of our Methodist brothers and sisters in Mexico. There will be more information on this that will be forthcoming over the coming days. It is clear that there are significant damages to the Methodist churches in the area and that this is a time for churches in the Cal-Pac Conference to help our neighbors. We ask that churches prayerfully consider sending work teams to help with the repairs. Mexicali is not a long drive from anywhere in Cal-Pac on the west side of the Pacific.
